This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
