A systems problem at Edinburgh's air traffic control meant no planes could arrive or depart from the hub.

Passenger services have restarted at Edinburgh Airport following a substantial ATC system failure brought the international hub to a standstill.

All incoming and outgoing flights were suspended because of an systems problem that occurred at about 08:30.

Some passengers reported being stuck in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Services Recommence with Ongoing Delays

Officials announced at 10:40 that flights had resumed, and thanked passengers for their "patience and understanding".

That said, considerable delays are likely to persist for some time. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been cancelled, with a host of additional flights subject to postponements.

Officials had initially projected that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be disrupted.

"Passengers are advised to check directly with their airline for the most up-to-date details on their individual travel plans," was the consistent advice.

Cause of the Chaos

Officials linked the operational halt to an systems failure with its air traffic control provider.

Travelers are still being urged to verify the schedule of their flight before heading to the terminal as residual delays are cleared.
